Soffits & Cedar Woodwork in the Fraser Valley
Cedar tongue-and-groove soffits and exterior ceilings are the detail that makes a Fraser Valley home read as custom. The warm wood underside on a soffit, entry ceiling or covered deck draws the eye and softens an otherwise hard exterior. Moonrise specializes in this work, running clean cedar T&G across soffits, porch and patio ceilings, and feature beams, with the ventilation, reveals and mitres done properly so it looks tight and lasts. Soffits also do a real job: they protect the roof edge and, when vented correctly, let the attic and roof assembly breathe. We finish cedar soffits as part of full exterior packages and as a standalone upgrade, working for both homeowners and the custom-home builders we subcontract to across Abbotsford, Mission and the valley.

What to know
Why are cedar soffits worth it?
A soffit is the underside of the roof overhang, and on most homes it is an afterthought in vinyl or aluminum. Switching to cedar tongue-and-groove is one of the highest-impact, lowest-square-footage upgrades you can make: it is the warm line your eye catches at the entry and along the eaves, and it is the single detail most associated with architect-designed custom homes in the Fraser Valley. Carried into a covered porch or deck ceiling, it turns an outdoor space into a room.
Do cedar soffits still need to be ventilated?
Yes. Soffits are part of how a roof assembly breathes, intake air enters at the eaves and exits at the ridge, keeping the attic dry and preventing ice and moisture problems. A good cedar soffit looks seamless but still includes the right ventilation, whether through continuous vent strips integrated into the run or discreet vented sections. We detail this so you get the look without compromising the roof.
Materials & options
What we work with.
Western red cedar T&G
Clear or knotty tongue-and-groove cedar, the standard for warm, premium soffits and ceilings.
Best for: Custom homes and high-end entries.
Pre-finished cedar
Cedar finished before install for consistent colour and less on-site work.
Best for: Tight schedules and consistent tone.
Vented cedar systems
Cedar runs that integrate continuous or discreet ventilation to keep the roof breathing.
Best for: Wherever the soffit covers attic or roof intake.
Feature beams & fascia
Cedar wrapping on exposed beams and fascia to tie the woodwork together.
Best for: Pairing soffits with visible structure and overhangs.
Our process
How we do it.
Plan the runs & ventilation
We map the soffit runs, ceilings and beams and plan the ventilation so the look and the roof both work.
Substrate & furring
We prepare a flat, sound substrate so the cedar sits tight with clean, consistent reveals.
Install cedar T&G
We run the tongue-and-groove with careful mitres, corners and end details, hiding fasteners where possible.
Finish & walkthrough
We apply or coordinate the protective finish and review the completed woodwork with you.
Good to know
A few things worth knowing.
Can I add cedar soffits without re-doing my whole exterior?+
Absolutely. Cedar soffits and entry or deck ceilings are one of our most popular standalone upgrades. We can run cedar on your overhangs and covered ceilings on their own, or as a feature paired with your existing siding, without re-cladding the entire home.
Do cedar soffits rot or need maintenance?+
Soffits are protected by the roof overhang, so they see far less direct rain than walls and weather slowly. Cedar resists rot naturally, and a finish coat extends its life and colour. Maintenance is light compared with cedar siding, an occasional clean and re-coat keeps them looking new.
Will cedar soffits affect my attic ventilation?+
Not when they are done right. Soffits are part of how the roof breathes, so we integrate the correct ventilation, continuous vent strips or discreet vented sections, into the cedar runs. You get the seamless wood look without trapping moisture in the attic or roof assembly.
Can you match cedar soffits to cedar or Hardie siding?+
Yes. We regularly tie cedar soffits, fascia and feature beams to either cedar or fiber-cement cladding so the whole exterior reads as one designed package. Coordinating the woodwork with the siding is exactly the kind of finish detail we specialize in.
