Coquitlam modern home, fluted cladding & black soffits
A flat-roofed modern home in Coquitlam whose exterior is built from three surfaces doing three jobs: smooth white panel with crisp reveals on the main walls, a fluted wood-look cladding that wraps the entry volume and the front corner, and black ribbed metal soffit running under every overhang and across the ceiling of the rear covered patio. A wood tongue-and-groove ceiling over the front door is the one warm surface at the entry. Photographed as the exterior was being completed; the cladding and soffit work shown is finished.

Worth knowing
Why three surfaces, and why these?
A flat-roofed modern house lives or dies on its lines. The smooth white panel gives the big walls a quiet plane; the fluted cladding gives the entry a texture you can read from the street; the black soffit turns the roof edge into a single dark stroke around the whole house. Each one has one job, and the details are about keeping the joints between them straight.
What does a reveal have to do?
The gaps between panels are part of the design, so they have to land in the same place on every wall and line through at the corners and window heads. Behind them is the flashing that actually keeps the wall dry. The side-passage frame shows the reveals running true from the eave to the ground.
Why black metal soffit here rather than cedar?
Because the house asks for it. Cedar warms a craftsman home; on a flat-roofed modern one a black ribbed soffit keeps the overhang crisp and disappears into shadow, and it never needs re-finishing. The one place the design wants warmth, the front entry, gets a wood ceiling instead.
Materials
What it’s made of.
Smooth panel, white
Large-format panel with reveal joints kept in line across walls, corners and window heads.
Fluted cladding, wood-look
Vertical ribbed profile on the entry and front corner — the texture that reads from the street.
Black ribbed metal soffit
Continuous under every overhang and across the patio ceiling, so the flat roof reads as one dark line.
