Abbotsford townhouses, board & batten and lap
Two three-storey townhouse blocks on one Abbotsford site, about thirty metres apart, and Moonrise did all of the siding on both. The street block is white board and batten and smooth panel over a stone base, with shake in the gables; the rear block is cream lap siding with grey panel dormers, black trim and black soffits. Two different exteriors on one site, sharing a colour story so they read as one development. Photographed from the air and the ground in September, at the finishing stage, with protective film still on the glass.

Our scope
What we did here
- White board and batten and smooth panel across the street block
- Shake siding in the street block's gables
- Cream lap siding across the rear block
- Grey panel on the rear block's dormers
- Trim and flashing at the transitions, including where the siding meets the stone base

Worth knowing
Why two different exteriors on one site?
The street block faces the road and carries the more formal treatment: white board and batten and panel over stone, shake in the gables. The rear block is quieter, cream lap with grey panel dormers. Black trim and soffits on both, and the same roof, tie them together, so from the air they read as one development and not two buildings that happen to share a lot.
What does board and batten ask of the installer?
Straight lines, for three storeys. Every batten is a vertical you can sight down, so any that wander show from the street. The spacing has to work out around windows and at the corners without leaving a thin sliver, and the battens have to stop cleanly at the trim band above the stone.
Where does the siding meet the stone?
At a flashed ledge just above the stone base. The stone isn't Moonrise's work, but that transition is, and it's where water gets behind a wall if it's rushed. The close-up frames show the panel finishing in a straight line above the stone, all the way along.
Materials
What it’s made of.
Board and batten, white
The field material of the street block, battens kept plumb and evenly spaced across three storeys.
Lap siding, cream
The rear block's field walls, courses run level around every corner and dormer.
Panel, white and grey
Smooth panel on the street block and grey panel on the rear dormers.
Stone base
Not Moonrise's work. Shown for how the siding finishes above it.
